POSITION SUMMARY:

The Democracy Fund is seeking an Evaluation and Learning Associate to support our Strategy, Impact and Learning (SIL) team in developing strong organization and programmatic strategies, evaluating their effectiveness, and facilitating reflection and learning across the organization. The new position will support broader organizational evaluation and learning efforts by serving as the point person for knowledge and evidence management, as well as spearheading efforts to compile, analyze, and visualize quantitative performance and impact data.

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about making our democracy work better. Strong candidates will possess a nuanced understanding of how to apply systems and complexity thinking to monitoring, evaluation and learning work, and bring several years of experience in strategy development, evaluation and learning. The successful candidate will have a genuine curiousity and enthusiasm for experimental and creative approaches to evidence-based learning, grounded in the rigorous collection and analysis of data to support program decision-making. The successful candidate will also have a track record of working well with others to get things done in a complex, fast-paced environment and will thrive as part of a small, highly collaborative team.

The Evaluation and Learning Associate will report to the Director of Evaluation and Learning.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and maintains internal systems for compiling and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data on performance and impact
  • Develops innovative and creative ways to present qualitative and quantitative data to key decision-makers through the use of dashboards and other visualization methods
  • Provides technical and administrative support to evaluations conducted by external experts, including overseeing “evidence onboarding” of external evaluation teams
  • Works closely with SIL and program staff to develop appropriate qualitative and quantitative metrics for grantees and DF programming
  • Supports the use of qualitative and quantitative metrics from grantees and DF programs for ongoing programmatic learning and decision-making
  • Provides support on the creation of reporting and other documentation for the Democracy Fund board on strategy, impact and learning topics
  • Provides support, as needed, to the Vice President for Strategy and Programs and the Manager of Learning and Strategy to support the strategy development process for new initiatives
  • Actively works to support the success of other staff members, not only within the Strategy, Impact and Learning unit but of the entire Democracy Fund team, and cultivate an organizational culture that is highly collaborative, positive, and productive
  • Collaborate with colleagues on supportive and complementary approaches that advance Democracy Fund’s overall mission and goals.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Deep passion for strengthening American democracy
  • BA required. Advanced degree in the social sciences a plus.
  • At least 4-6 years of experience working in program design, monitoring, evaluation and learning field, or 2-3 years professional experience plus an advanced degree.
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and written), including the willingness and ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse spectrum of staff, grantees and external partners at all levels
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and qualitative research and/or evaluation methods
  • Experience with data visualization methods, including dashboards
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficiency with qualitative (nVivo, Dedoose) and quantititave (R) data platforms a plus  
  • Professional maturity, demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment
  • Skilled in pro-actively handling multiple assignments simultaneously and prioritizing tasks and deadlines with an attention to detail to deliver high quality results
  • Strong strategic skills and proven ability to translate strategy into action
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and adaptable in working in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment
  • Commitment to learn and grow in a workplace that values diversity of multiple dimensions
  • Ability to travel periodically for project work
  • Flexibility and initiative to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to live in the Washington, D.C. area is required.
