Communications and Design Internship

We are looking for a smart, creative, and enthusiastic full-time intern to work side-by-side with our Communications team to support the organization’s design, branding, and outreach work and to enhance the influence of our grantees and program-related efforts among target audiences during the Spring 2019 term.

Interns are an integral part of our team, and are offered an opportunity work on a variety of tasks that are critical to our communications strategy and will provide a holistic understanding of strategic communications planning and execution. 


  • Assist in the development of new branded templates, including for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Indesign
  • Work with staff to brainstorm and draft graphics and other visual content for social media
  • Research and help build out a robust library of on-brand graphical assets (photography, illustration, etc.)
  • Create a repository of social media assets, content, and templates — and guidance — for easy use by communications team colleagues
  • Assist in the creation, organization, and deployment of organizational swag
  • Participate in the process for the redesign of Democracy Fund’s website, including in synthesizing feedback and scheduling cross team meetings
  • Assist with posting grantee profiles on Democracy Fund's website
  • Support logistical and administrative needs of the Communications & Network team and collaborate internally across Democracy Fund as assigned
  • Write and distribute weekly update for the organization including status of ongoing projects and highlighting upcoming events


  • Deep passion for strengthening American democracy
  • Candidates must be a college graduate or graduate student with an interest in and knowledge of design and communications — and a passion for the intersection of public policy, national politics, and journalism/media
  • Enthusiastic, thirsty to learn, proactive, willing to try new things, and eager for feedback
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • Proficient proofreader, exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational, project planning, and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with others in a collaborative, team environment
  • Experience in developing web content a plus, but not required
  • Professional in verbal and written communications, able to exercise good judgment
  • Willingness to work with leaders, advocates, and media from across the political spectrum
  • Position is based in Washington, D.C.
